The AIACC AEP awards are intended to recognize those individuals and organizations that have demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to Emerging Professionals, the AIA, and the architectural profession.
2015 Emerging Professional COA Awards
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
To advance local and regional excellence, the AIACC’s Academy for Emerging Professionals Council of Advisors developed an awards program to recognize those who contribute in assisting Emerging Professionals and their colleagues in pursuing their personal and professional goals. These individuals recognize the importance of emerging professional AIA members and their contribution to the current environment and future of architecture. The following award categories are open for nominations:
Firm Mentorship Award: this award is given to an AIA firm in California that has made an extraordinary effort to mentor emerging professionals in their firm through the implementation of specific programs.
Chapter Award: this award is given to an AIA chapter in California for the development of superb programming and the fostering of leadership within the emerging professional membership.
Associates Award: this award is given to an individual Associate AIA member in California who has exemplified leadership, and has also demonstrated unparalleled commitment to their chapter or region’s membership, the community, professional organizations, and/or design and construction industries.
Young Architects Award: this award is given to an individual Young Architect in California who has demonstrated leadership qualities, and has made significant contributions to the profession in the early stages of their architectural career.
Student Leader Award: this award is given to an individual student in California for their tremendous service, dedication, and commitment to the consistent growth and development of their AIAS chapter, school, and community.
Educator Award: this award is given to an Educator in California for their outstanding contribution to the formal education of architecture students.
ELIGIBILITY & ENTRIES
- Nominees must meet the eligibility requirements set forth in the applicable award category.
- In order to ensure the fair and thorough evaluation of all nominees for the AEP Awards, Submission Material must be submitted in the manner described for the applicable award category
- All entries submitted without the required submission materials will be disqualified.

AEP Firm Mentorship Award Submission Guidelines
The AEP Firm Mentorship Award is the highest award given by the AEP to a firm in California that has made an extraordinary effort to mentor emerging professionals.
Eligibility
All firms in California that have an AIA member as a principal are eligible for this award.
Criteria
- Providing consistent support and mentorship opportunities for emerging professionals within and outside of the practice.
- Actively support emerging professionals in the pursuit of IDP, ARE, and licensure.
- Promote a professional environment of mutual respect and continuous opportunity for emerging professionals to progress professionally.
Submission Material Requirements (not to exceed 13 pages):
The following materials should be submitted in the listed order:
- Completed AEP Firm Mentorship Award Application.
- One-page nomination letter or statement by an AIA or Associate AIA member in good standing.
- A one-page letter of support by an AIA or Associate AIA member in good standing.
- Supporting exhibits, not to exceed 10 pages, including the following:
- Summary of mentorship activity
- Mentorship materials used within the firm
- Additional support letters from emerging professionals within or outside of the firm
AEP Chapter Award Submission Guidelines
The highest award given by the AEP to an AIA chapter for the development of superb programming and the fostering of leadership within the emerging professional membership.
Eligibility
All AIA Chapters in California are eligible for this award.
Selection Criteria
- Outstanding accomplishments in the creation, development, and delivery of creative programs for its emerging professional mentorship.
- Demonstrated Chapter mentoring in community and professional organizations, as well as with local business, the design and construction industry, and other related groups.
- Consistently active and engaged emerging professional mentorship throughout the year.
- An effective Chapter Executive Committee that has provided consistent leadership and Chapter representation on issues affecting emerging professionals locally and nationally.
Submission Material Requirements (not to exceed 13 pages):
The following materials should be submitted in the listed order:
- Completed AEP Chapter Award Application.
- A one-page letter of nomination from an AIA or Associate AIA member in good standing.
- A one-page letter of support from an AIA or Associate AIA member in good standing.
- Supporting documentation, not to exceed 10 pages total, exhibiting the character and atmosphere of the Chapter, including:
- Copies of any news articles, fliers, or photos for their emerging professional program.
- Copies of Chapter newsletters and other publications.
- Additional one-page letter(s) of support (limit three total).

AEP Associates Award Submission Guidelines
The highest award given by the AEP to an individual Associate AIA member who has exemplified leadership, and who has also demonstrated unparalleled commitment to their Chapter or region’s membership, to the community, and to the design and construction industry.
Eligibility
Associate members of the AIA who are not licensed to practice architecture by the submission deadline are eligible to be nominated. Any Chapter President, member of the AIACC Board of Directors, or member of the College of Fellows may nominate one or more individuals.
Desired Traits of Nominees
- Motivated, energetic, and involved with AIA membership.
- Seen as one that represents the values of Associate membership within the profession.
- Shows exceptional skill and leadership within their chapter or office.
- Stellar professional work and service towards their profession.
Submission Material Requirements (not to exceed 12 pages):
The following materials should be submitted in the listed order:
- Completed AEP Associates Award Application.
- A one-page nomination letter from any AIA Chapter President, member of the AIACC Board of Directors, or member of the College of Fellows in good standing.
- A biography or resume of the nominee, not to exceed two pages. This document could
- include a list of offices, positions, honors, publications, or presentations given.
- A one-page statement of contribution
- Supporting documentation, not to exceed 5 pages, that contains images, drawings or
- other materials that demonstrates outstanding achievements.
AEP Young Architects Award Submission Guidelines
The Young Architects Award is given to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, and have made significant contributions to the profession in the early stages of their architectural career.
Eligibility
Architect members of the AIA who have been licensed to practice architecture fewer than 10 years by the submission deadline are eligible to be nominated. The term “young architect” has no reference to the age of nominees. Any Chapter President, member of the AIACC Board of Directors, or member of the College of Fellows may nominate one or more individuals.
Desired Traits of Nominees
- Motivated, energetic, and involved with AIA membership.
- Exhibits cooperative skills and the desire and the ability to present successful programs.
- Exhibits exceptional dexterity and leadership within their Chapter or office.
Submission Material Requirements (not to exceed 12 pages):
The following materials should be submitted in the listed order:
- Completed AEP Young Architects Award Application
- A one-page nomination letter from any Chapter President, member of the AIACC Board of Directors, or member of the College of Fellows in good standing.
- A biography or resume of the nominee, not to exceed two pages. This document could include offices, positions, honors, publications, or presentations given.
- A one-page statement of contribution
- Supporting documentation, not to exceed 5 pages, that contains images, drawings, or other materials that demonstrates outstanding achievements.
AEP Student Leader Award
The highest award given by the AEP to an individual student for his or her outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to the consistent growth and development of their AIAS Chapter, school, and community.
Eligibility
Student members of AIAS or AIA who are currently enrolled in an architectural program are eligible to be nominated. The term “student” has no reference to the age of nominees. Any AIAS or AIA Chapter President, Educator, member of the AIACC Board of Directors, or member of the College of Fellows may nominate one or more individuals.
Desired Traits of Nominees
- Motivated, energetic, and involved with AIA, AIAS, or other similar professional organizations.
- Exhibits cooperative skills and the desire and the ability to present successful programs.
- Exhibits exceptional dexterity and leadership within their institution, Chapter, or office.
- Regular involvement with campus groups, community groups, local businesses, the design and construction industry, etc.
Submission Material Requirements (not to exceed 10 pages):
The following materials should be submitted in the listed order:
- Completed AEP Student Award Application
- A one-page nomination letter from any AIAS or AIA Chapter President, Educator, member of the AIACC Board of Directors, or member of the College of Fellows.
- A biography of the nominee, not to exceed two pages. This document could include a list of positions, honors, programs, publications, or presentations given.
- A one-page statement of contributions.
- Supporting documentation, not to exceed 5 pages, that contains images, drawings, or other materials that demonstrates outstanding achievements.
AEP Educator Award
The highest award given by the AEP to an Educator for their outstanding contribution to the formal education of architecture students.
Eligibility
Current AIA members who are Educators of a post-secondary Architectural Program are eligible to be nominated. Any student, Chapter President, member of the AIACC Board of Directors, or member of the College of Fellows may nominate one or more individuals.
Criteria
- Outstanding contribution to the formal education of architecture students at any post-secondary institution.
- Exemplary record of extolling the virtues of excellence in architecture and the environment to the public.
- History of guidance towards career counseling for architecture students.
Submission Material Requirements (not to exceed 10 pages):
The following materials should be submitted in the order listed:
- Completed AEP Educator Award Application.
- A one-page nomination letter from any student, Chapter President, member of the AIACC Board of Directors, or member of the College of Fellows.
- A biography of the nominee, not to exceed two pages. This document could include a list of offices, positions, honors, publications, and presentations given.
- Titles of courses taught and programs administered by the nominee with brief descriptions of each.
- A one-page statement of contribution
- Supporting documentation, not to exceed 5 pages, that contains images, drawings, or other materials that best demonstrates outstanding achievements.
