In Recognition of the Newly Licensed

AEPThe path to licensure is a long, arduous journey. The surface is only touched when one graduates from university—there is still the Architecture Experience Program (AXP) to complete; preparation for enduring the seven Architect Registration Examinations (ARE), then of course passing the AREs, all while trying to earn a living as an associate architect. The pomp and circumstance march which traditionally accompanies a graduation ceremony normally signifies the end of a journey. In the case of the architect, it is only the beginning. In honor of those who have recently endured the process and are now licensed, the American Institute of Architects California (AIA CA), recognizes those who have recently become licensed.

AIA CA would like to take a moment and direct your attention towards those who have earned their license in the second quarter of 2019:

Travel Opportunity for YOU

[CLICK TO DOWNLOAD THE PDF]

Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant

Deadline

Applications are due on Wednesday, November 1st by 5:00 pm EST. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. No exceptions.

Award

Single or multiple awards totaling $15,000.

Purpose

To further the personal and professional development of an architect in early or mid-career through travel. Travel plans should be centered on a selected topic of interest to the individual, rather than as part of a larger humanitarian or institutional endeavor. If appropriate, the winner may be asked to present at the Center for Architecture upon return.

Eligibility

Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a degree in architecture as well as full-time practitioners either licensed or unlicensed. Academics may apply, but must also be practicing architects.

Jury Guidelines

Proposed travel plans should demonstrate a focused course of study engaging the applicant’s interests and concerns and occur outside of the academy. The travel scholarship was originally based on the idea of the Grand Tour in which recent architectural graduates would travel through Europe experiencing art, architecture and culture first-hand. The scholarship focus is less on academic projects than on self-directed education. Proposals will be judged on the following criteria:

Need Focused Beneficial

The journey cannot be completed without funding A clear and focused line of inquiry
Valuable to the applicant’s professional practice

Application Requirements

A complete application includes the application form, three letters of recommendation and the $50.00 entry fee. The application form and recommendation letters must be submitted both electronically (PDF) and in hardcopy.

  • Cover Page form: The entry must include a project title and abstract.
  • Statement of Purpose: In approximately 250 words outline the proposed travel plans. Be sure to discuss the value of these

plans to the individual applicant and describe their significance to the applicant’s professional development.

  • CV: Include your academic background, degree in architecture and date, and a brief outline of professional experience with

    roles in projects and/or firms.

  • Itinerary: Include a detailed schedule of proposed travel plans, mode of transportation and room and board.
  • Portfolio: Portfolios must be submitted electronically and in hardcopy and demonstrate a range of the applicant’s design

projects. Applicant’s portfolio should be no longer than 10 pages and the file limit is 5MB. These samples are expected to be of

professional quality and are very important factors in the evaluation process.

  • Two Letters of Recommendation: All letters of recommendation, both electronic and hard copy versions, must be signed and

on letterhead. Letters should be written in support of the proposed travel plans and attest to the applicant’s capability and professional promise. One letter must be written by a member of the American Institute for Architects (AIA).

The path to licensure is a long, arduous journey. The surface is only touched when one graduates from university—there is still the Architecture Experience Program (AXP) to complete; preparation for enduring the seven Architect Registration Examinations (ARE) , then of course passing the AREs, all while trying to earn a living as an associate architect.
